Canadian Drought Monitor

The Canadian Drought Monitor (CDM) is Canada's official source for the monitoring and reporting of drought in Canada. From this page you can access a variety of products and information about current drought conditions across the country.

Map of Canada showing drought conditions at the end of December, 2017. Drought levels, in increasing order of severity, are as follows: Abnormally Dry, Moderate Drought, Severe Drought, Extreme Drought, and Exceptional Drought. The more severe types of drought are always surrounded by less severe types of drought (for example, wherever there is Moderate Drought, it is surrounded by Abnormally Dry conditions).

Drought conditions are present in:

  • British Columbia:
    • Abnormally Dry conditions in:
      • a pocket in the north spanning Dease Lake towards the Yukon Border
      • a thin pocket covering the southeastern half of the province encompassing Prince George towards Kelowna; and
      • a pocket on eastern Vancouver Island
    • Moderate Drought in:
      • a large pocket in the southwestern portion half of the province stretching from the Kelowna to the Alberta border encompassing Williams Lake, Revelstoke and Nelson
    • Severe Drought in:
      • a small pocket surrounding Salmon Arm; and
      • a pocket encompassing Lees Corner, Gang Ranch and Big Bar Creek
    • Extreme Drought in:
      • a pocket surrounding Cache Creek; and
      • a pocket surrounding Meadow Lake
  • Alberta:
    • Abnormally Dry conditions in:
      • a thin pocket running from the south central British Columbia border towards Edmonton and around the south central region by Hanna; and
      • a large area in the north encompassing Rainbow Lake towards the Northwest Territories
    • Moderate Drought in:
      • a pocket in the north, south of High Level; and
      • a large pocket across the southern part of the province encompassing Calgary and High River, as well as along the southeastern border with Saskatchewan
    • Severe Drought in:
      • a pocket extending from southwestern Saskatchewan to surround Taber, Brooks and Airdrie
    • Extreme Drought in:
      • a pocket encompassing Claresholm to Fort Macleod
  • Saskatchewan:
    • Abnormally Dry conditions in:
      • a pocket stretching across the central province, from the border with Alberta at Lloydminster, covering Outlook, going north of Prince Alberta and ending at Swan Plain along the Manitoba border
    • Moderate Drought in:
      • a pocket in the southcentral region spanning west to east of the province encompassing Maple Creek, Swift Current, Yorkton and Carlyle, as well as Saskatoon and Prince Alberta
    • Severe Drought in:
      • a pocket surround the south central region spanning Eastend towards Tribune
    • Extreme Drought in:
      • a pocket in the southcentral region covering Assiniboia, Regina and Weyburn
  • Manitoba:
    • Abnormally Dry conditions in:
      • a large pocket in the southern half of the province
    • Moderate Drought in:
      • a small pocket along the southwestern Saskatchewan border, including Melita, Swan River and Roblin
  • Ontario:
    • Abnormally Dry conditions in:
      • a large pocket in the north extending to the west coast of the James Ba
      • a small pocket at Fort Frances, along the border with the United States of America
      • a pocket in the south encompassing London, Parry Sound, Norfolk County, the Greater Toronto Area and Peterborough
  • Quebec:
    • Abnormally Dry conditions in:
      • a pocket surrounding Amos
      • a pocket surrounding Montreal and Sherbrooke; and
      • a pocket surrounding Ste-Anne-des-Monts in eastern Quebec along the Atlantic
  • Nova Scotia:
    • Abnormally Dry conditions in:
      • a pocket in the southwestern corner, encompassing Yarmouth, Shelburne and Digby
      • a small pocket encompassing Upper Linden and New Glasgow on the Northumberland Strait; and
      • a pocket on northern Cape Breton Island
  • Prince Edward Island:
    • Abnormally Dry conditions in:
      • a pocket encompassing the southern half of the island
  • Newfoundland and Labrador:
    • Abnormally Dry conditions in:
      • a large pocket encompassing most of Newfoundland island, with the exception of the region surrounding Corner Brook
    • Moderate Drought in:
      • a small pocket encompassing Cape Ray to Harbour Breton in south Newfoundland
    • Severe Drought in:
      • A small pocket encompassing Grand Bank
  • Yukon:
    • Abnormally Dry conditions in:
      • a large pocket along the entire southern border with British Columbia surrounding Whitehorse
  • North West Territories:
    • Abnormally Dry conditions in:
      • a large pocket along the northern border with Nunavut stretching downward to cover Yellowknife

Drought has not been analyzed for Nunavut and the Arctic Archipelago.

Regions in northern Canada may not be as accurate as other regions due to limited information.
