Check out Soup!

Pulses, including peas, chickpeas, beans and lentils, are key ingredients in vegetable soups. And so is science. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada researchers are providing farmers with information on how by putting pulses into their crop rotations they can use less energy, conserve soil and water and improve disease and weed control.

Alright! You've chosen a can of soup! At Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, we think this little can is full of miracles.

[The can of soup begins to bulge as if there were something inside of it that is trying to get out.]

Literally pulsing with nutrition from the peas...

[The can of soup disappears and is replaced by peas in a pod.]


[The peas in a pod disappear and are replaced by chickpeas.]


[The chickpeas disappear and are replaced by string beans.]


[The chickpeas disappear and are replaced by lentils.]

...and other vegetables that make it up.

[The lentils disappear and are replaced by a dried bean, an onion, and a couple carrots.]

[The camera pans back down to the can of soup. The lid is now open. All the vegetables we've just seen start falling into the can from the top of the screen. A white, circular line appears around the can giving the impression that it is being examined.]

As a matter of fact, the ingredients in this soup, the ones we call 'pulses' are high in protein...

...and have natural protection against insects and disease.

We have an intense interest in pulses because we know they provide farmers crop rotation options...

[The pulses disappear and new pulses start sprouting.]

...that help protect and improve soil and water resources.

[The barn and the pulses slide off screen to the right. A bowl of vegetable soup slides in from the left. The camera slowly zooms out to show more of the blue background.]

They can also improve health and well-being and combat obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

[A conveyor belt slides onto the screen from below. It stops when the bowl of soup is sitting on it. Other types of pulses appear on the conveyor belt. As the conveyor belt moves more pulses appear. Two transport trucks are waiting on the side of the conveyor belt. The ground that they are parked on is stamped with a map of the world.]

The world is very interested in what we have to say about the things in your can of soup. And we're happy to share what we've learned...

[One by one the transport trucks turn on their engines and drive off screen.]

[Honk honk!]

...because we know that our science and research will help feed the world efficiently and safely.

[The conveyor belt, pulses and world map slide off screen to the left. They are replaced by the same can of soup that we saw at the beginning of the video.]
